Fix build warnings #233

This PR resolves various build warnings, mostly ones that cropped up in the process of merging in sp. Now we can actually build with -Wall. Basically everything falls under:

Remove unused variables
Fix uninitialized variables
Remove tab characters
Fix type mismatches

Fixes #225
