GFS 15.2.10[11][12] updates #52

Process updates for GFSv15.2.10 and GFSv15.2.11. Prep for and process updates for GFSv15.2.12.

GFSv15.2.11 details:

From SDM log:

3v. 1938Z - ARFC from IDSB: "EMC has requested that we turn on canadian amdar, tamdar and latam airlines data into the global assimilation. Minor change for SPA switching from monitor mode to assimilate. This is in response to losing aircraft data... We would like to make the change now in time for the 18z gfs." Approved by NCO DD Becky Cosgrove, IDSB Chief Carissa Klemmer and the SDM. 2003Z - SPA Diane..Beginning work on implementation of ARFC - GFS/GDAS emergency fix to assimilate additional aircraft data. This change was approved in the ARFC group chat. 2024Z - Work on this ARFC is complete. The changes will take effect with today's 18Z GFS run. (RLR/RJS)

From April 10th RFC memo:

RFC 6745 – GFS v15.2.11 – On WCOSS, updated two fix files to assimilate more aircraft data. The GFS and GDAS have seen a significant decrease in aircraft data due to fewer commercial flights during the Coronavirus outbreak. This change allows for assimilation of aircraft data from other sources. Implemented on April 7 at 1930Z.

Received some details about work going on for v15.2.12. Need to use this issue to handle changes in ops for v15.2.10, v15.2.11, and v15.2.12.

The v15.2.12 change has to do with a new CrIS bufr dump file coming April 22nd:

Next week NCO implements GFS v15.2.12. This version updates exglobal_analysis_fv3gfs.sh.ecf and read_cris.f90. There are now fix file changes in GFS v15.2.12. Tag fv3da_gfs.v15.2.12 was passed to NCO for this implementation.

The GFS v15.2.11 went in April 7th at 18Z gfs.

GFS v15.3 is scheduled for late May. GFS v15.3 adds assimilation of COSMIC-2 data.

From April 17th RFC memo:

RFC 6789 – GFS v15.2.12, obsproc_globalv3.2.6, obsproc_shared/bufr_dumplist/2.2.0 - Implement name changes for the WCOSS NPP CrIS FSR (Full Spectral Resolution) bufr dumps. The NPP CrIS FSR bufr dump "escris" will be renamed as "escrsf" and "crisdb" will be renamed as "crsfdb". To be implemented on April 22 at 1130Z.

Other known info for upcoming v15.2.12 changes:

The v15.2.12 change has to do with a new CrIS bufr dump file coming April 22nd:

  • new dump file in GDAx and another one coming April 22nd
  • new ProdGSI tag: fv3da_gfs.v15.2.12

Processed GDA updates for v15.2.12 as of the 2020042212 cycle.

Installed RB of obsproc_global v3.2.6 on supported platforms: Mars, Venus, Surge, Luna, Hera Will install OT when available. Need to install on Orion too.

Reopening, I need to pull updates into develop branch for obsproc_global version.

Final OT tag for obsproc_global available: OT-obsproc_global.v3.2.6-20200422

Installed and updated symlinks on WCOSS and Hera to point to OT tag rather than prior RB. No impact to results switching to final tag.
