I get the question enough of why one would use FIMS over/to replace SS3 and on what timeframe that I think it is worth a write up that is publicly accessible with input from @Rick-Methot-NOAA (or other SS3 development team members). I believe we have it a bit in the FIMS TOR and in the manuscript, but IMO we need a living version on the web also.

+1 on the web. @msupernaw mentioned that he initiated the effort during a seaside chat meeting. See issue #539

Related to the model transition topic is the issue of continued support for users of existing models while features of FIMS are being developed. This is necessary for an orderly transition. Continued support for SS3 was an explicit request from some users in early 2020 as the Science Board began contemplating launching the FIMS project.
