I was going to open an issue to discuss this, but creating a Pull Request seemed like a more efficient way to move forward--additional changes are welcome.
Note: while updating my local clone I accidentally pushed a merge to main 5082c3dc03a471a562bb1906ab21d6a73eed503a. I think that all these changes seem to be already present in the repo, so I don't know what's going on and I don't know whether further cleanup is needed before merging this new PR.
Recent discussion in https://github.com/NOAA-FIMS/FIMS/issues/535 helped me see that our information on the workflow for outside collaborators could use some work. This pull requests takes text from https://github.com/NOAA-FIMS/collaborative_workflow/issues/6#issuecomment-991369739 and also refines the section headers.
