unit tests failure on Gaea #296

Describe the bug Tests 03, 04, and 15 in the t test directory have been reported to be failing on Gaea.

Expected behavior Tests should run and pass across all platforms.

All the tests pass on PAN and GFDL workstations.

Test 03, 04 and 15 are the ones that fail when mpirun is not available.
