Google Earth placemarks to access OSMC functionality #426

Reported by steven.c.hankin on 22 Feb 2008 01:18 UTC Now that we have metadata summaries, data listings and plotted outputs associated with platforms on OSMC (accessible by clicking on the metadtaa summaries at the bottom), we have opened some new doors on interesting things that might be done with KML placemarks on Google Earth. Platforms can be shown on Google Earth using various placemarks (could turn platform types on and off with the GE controls). Clicking a placemark can bring up a new HTML page which provides the metadata (platform type, id, country, etc.) and various links. The links would get plots and data as they do in the OSMC interface and/or would take you to the various URLs that were associated with the platform.

One part of this task would be Jing' s -- developing the KML for the place markers given the netCDF intermediate file of platform locations. The other part would be for Kevin -- developing the HTML metadata product.

After discussion we agreed that Jing could begin looking into getting the placemarks onto Google Earth at his convenience. Kevin should continue with the OSMC development work that he was already doing -- metadata output at the same granularity as the map ("most recent") and visualization styles for all relevant platforms (profilers, drifters, moorings, ...). When these are ready they can made accessible via the intermediate HTML page from Google Earth that is described above. Unclear who should develop intermediate HTML page as an LAS product from OSMC. TBD ...
