Organization name change #61

Closed Shaquu closed 5 years ago

Shaquu commented 5 years ago

As you see repository got moved from @oliverrahner to Organization. And as a current organization name is a little bulky I think we can discuss here a little about a new name - definietly a shorter one.

Anyone has any idea? @radokristof @crxporter @flic @radionoise @emilingerslev and the rest of good people here. I call you!

radokristof commented 5 years ago

What kind of name do you want to have? Independent from Node-RED and HomeKit or somehow connected to these or both of them. Like Node-RED-HAP or something else...

djiwondee commented 5 years ago

My two cents: Node-RED-Contrib or Node-red-HAP-contriband may be the repo to be changed to HAP-bridged

Shaquu commented 5 years ago

I feel like calling it HAP is a llittle to much. HAP is about providing api and we provide a game ready tools. It’s difficult to say what I think for now :)

Do we plan on making something more then this module alone?

Hi guys,

you are the contributors, I'm just a consumer of your very nice game ready tools. So I like what you do, feel free to decide. I just thought some branded names would be help to identify the stuff quickly.

For something else, there is my complimentary node that I’m working on, hap-NodeRed, which exposes all existing homebridge devices to NodeRed.

https://github.com/NorthernMan54/HAP-NodeRed

Having the two together does make some sense.

Hello @NorthernMan54,

https://github.com/NorthernMan54/HAP-NodeRed Having the two together does make some sense.

good to know. I haven't tried to ask exactly for the way vice versa in this repo. Since HAP provides with ways for accessing Apple HomeKit, it would be reasonable to go this way too

NorthernMan54 commented 5 years ago

For organizations, we have this one sitting dormant

https://github.com/homebridge

Last summer we were looking at getting it going, but lost momentum.

Shaquu commented 5 years ago

Node-RED-Contrib is too general as we are not the only one who works on this (node-red-contrib- is the naming pattern for node-red modules). And as you see Node-RED-HAP or HAP-NodeRed is already taken by @NorthernMan54

@NorthernMan54 does it applies for us? I think we have no direct relation with Homebridge except parent HAP-nodejs.

NorthernMan54 commented 5 years ago

My personal opinion is that homebridge is the marketing name, and hap-nodejs is the technology name for the open source HomeKit implementation.

Hence my preference for homebridge. With my node I’m going to revisit naming before I publish to the world, and am not likely to keep the existing name.

IMAO, If we want a unique name, then we can follow the path of the homebridge project: The BRIDGE for HOMEKIT accessories was named the "Homebridge". This project is a implementation of the BRIDGE for HOMEKIT based on NODE RED. May be something like a "Redbridge" will be a good name?

Shaquu commented 5 years ago

Homebridge RED? Just like CDProjekt RED :)

Fearraiser commented 5 years ago

:) Also we can make the Heater accessory with name Red Heat and make logo with Arnold Schwarzenegger!

crxporter commented 5 years ago

“Homebridge” is a whole other thing... I would recommend to differentiate from them as this is a stand alone project

In my brain homebridge is taken...

Fearraiser commented 5 years ago

I suggest to take only the project's name creation logic. Nothing more...

NorthernMan54 commented 5 years ago

Are there two different names required, one for the organization and one for each node ( this one and mine )?

I consciously try to avoid using HomeKit in any naming etc, to avoid the potential for trademark infringement etc.

Shaquu commented 5 years ago

@NorthernMan54 they are not. It's about shortening it :) So we can really choose name for organization that doesn't defines us completly and gives us a little space.

I would avoid using alone node-red or Homekit too.

crxporter commented 5 years ago

I just noticed I'm using links in README and in the wiki that include the current name...

Let's pick something so we can get on with the fun stuff!

I vote node-red-homekit-bridged as that's what will likely be most recognizable when people search. If anyone has something good for the organization, let's have it...

Summary of above:

Wait - I just clicked the homebridge organization page - @NorthernMan54 I didn't realize you were part of that. To me it makes a whole lot of sense to put it there I say we should be:

homebridge/node-red-homekit-bridged

Then add in the homekit->node red by @NorthernMan54 as another project under the homebridge organization.

Only problem is over here "homebridge" is already taken and active...

NorthernMan54 commented 5 years ago

@Shaquu @crxporter

What about

@homebridge/node-red-contrib-homebridge-platform ( For this ) @homebridge/node-red-contrib-homebridge-control ( For mine, I'm not married to control but was trying to a word to indicate controlling or automating homebridge )

Shaquu commented 5 years ago

First problem. Is it fine to use homebridge organization name if we don’t own homebridge project? They can put us down eventually...

And even if we move to your organisation then I don’t think we can change the name - we could lose our position in npmjs and node-red repo.

NorthernMan54 commented 5 years ago

I was thinking about this further, and my project will only work with Homebridge exposed devices, so needs a tighter relationship with Homebridge, but that restriction does not exists with your work here. So linking this work tightly with Homebridge doesn’t make a lot of sense. So I'm withdraw my earlier suggestion.

What about our initials?

NRCHKB/node-red-contrib-homekit-bridged

Do we have to put something before the / ?

Shaquu commented 5 years ago

Initials are good idea actually:) Better then the full name.
