Inventory Data Source?

Hi,

I am currently learning CanFlood based on hazard rasters from a project and I may have to generate inventory data myself in a specific area in BC.

According to the manual it seems we can create data template via inventory constructor or use some reference from NPRI/GAR15.

Is there a website for us to directly download data to make this easier?

Hi Tong, Glad to hear you're learning CanFlood.

I understand you're looking for resources to create your own asset inventory in B.C.. Check out this section of the manual discussing the asset inventory which states "completing this template for a study area generally requires extensive data analysis outside the CanFlood plugin".

As far as we are aware, there are no pre-made inventories available (although there are supporting efforts underway to build Canada-wide data layers). In BC, a good starting point is Microsoft's CanadianBuildingFootprints and BC Assessment. If you're working in the LowerMainland or the Okanagan, IBI Group has constructed some inventories and we may be able to connect you with the data stewards.

Thanks for the clarification. Would you be able to elucidate briefly how to use CanadianBuildingFootprintshttps://github.com/microsoft/CanadianBuildingFootprints? My thought was using the inventory constructor to add scale and elevation similar to the method mentioned in 6.10 Tutorial 5a: Risk (L1) from NPRI and GAR15. I understand the manual didn’t recommend any method to populate scale values based on area, with that is there any reference to draw an assumption? Thanks, Tong

Hi Tong, The appropriate scale and elevation fields will depend on the objectives of your study (and resources available).

In the near future I'm told the flood risk assessment guidelines, which may be of some help, will be released here. In the meantime, you could contact Lisa to see if there is a draft available.

Thanks again for your kindly help. I will look into the flood risk assessment guidelines later and at this point I can assume some numbers for the inventory file as I am just trying to show some results as a simple case study based on a raster file in our project. I understand the manual suggests any study based on our own vulnerability functions but can I use the library (e.g., IBI 2015 functions) to quickly generate some results? I realized there isn’t an inventory csv stored in the working directory by using the library.

Of course you can use the provided templates and curves to generate results… these may not be meaningful however.
