EnergyPlus™ is a whole building energy simulation program that engineers, architects, and researchers use to model both energy consumption and water use in buildings.
Create a new ground heat exchanger model for use in EnergyPlus and design tools. The model should be capable of generating thermal response functions (g-functions), or direct simulation of ground heat exchanger systems. The model should properly simulate ground freezing, non-uniform undisturbed ground temperatures, and borefields with irregular shapes and sizes—all of which are commonly encountered in almost all GSHP applications and are currently lacking in current models. This model will enable building designers to be able to properly compare GSHP systems against other systems and eliminate the need to use third-party tools to generate the required thermal response functions.
