Setting the base branch to develop would streamline pull requests (reducing accidental pull requests into main), enable Github pull request templates and issue templates to be active from the develop branch, and ensure the most up-to-date Readme, Contributing guidelines, and code changes are visible to viewers of the repository on Github.com.

I'm going to go ahead and do this now because it's going to help as I setup github actions for CI testing (issue #6 )
