Migrate certain functions that were only defined in example scripts into core FLASC functionality. This simplifies traditional usage of raw data processing scripts and makes for a generally cleaner code. See the examples in the separate repository flasc_cookiecutter_template.

I agree with all of this, wasn't sure if this pull request will roll on to include more migration or if this one is ready to merge?
