Post the meeting it would be nice to gather participant feedback from a 1/2 page questionnaire and/or a survey monkey. Thanks to @Saskia-van-Manen for the idea.

here's the latest on the survey:

@cryocity suggested adding:

  1. What would you expect to be the follow up to this workshop?
  2. What were you expecting to get and did that happen ?
  3. Do you think the workshop was well organized and advertised ?
  4. Would you consider approaching NSF with your ideas after this workshop ?

@allenpope suggested adding:

  1. Did you understand the expected outcomes of the Hackathon?
  2. What worked well/what didn't in the run up to the event?
  3. What worked best/worst during the event itself?

Jim Herbsleb suggested adding:

  1. Past hackathon attendance
  2. Motivations for attending the Polar DataVis Hackathon
  3. Ideal outcomes for this hackathon
  4. Tasks participants want to accomplish
  5. Task preparation activity
  6. Source code contributions to OSS projects & motivations for making them
  7. Demographic information

I can pull together a document with specific questions that form a coherent survey by the end of Thursday (mountain time). This gives the OC time to comment on Friday.

Hi @chrismattmann and @Saskia-van-Manen, my name is Erik Trainer and I'm a post-doc working with Jim Herbsleb, @cchalalai, and @arunk054.

We're hoping to administer one questionnaire before and a different one after the event to see both participants' expectations and experiences. Since we've already done a fair bit of work developing these questionnaires for other hackathons we've studied, we'd like to explore the idea of adding your questions to our questionnaire--specifically the post-questionnaire, as you've indicated that you're interested in feedback about the event.

Here's a link to our current questionnaire: http://goo.gl/forms/ntR8XELRd8 The post questionnaire: http://goo.gl/forms/00Ffajg4vc

Let me know if this sounds like a possibility. Thanks!

Suggested questions to be added.

Questions on workshop organisation and facilitation:

Did you think the hackaton was well-advertised? Were communications regarding the hackathon clear? Was the frequency of communication appropriate? Did you have a clear idea of the objectives of the hackathon based on the information provided in advance? What was your preferred method of communiation regarding the hackathon? Website/github/e-mail/google group Do you think the duration of the hackathon was appropriate? Did you feel the hackathon was well-structured? Would you have liked to see any additional sessions? Did you have enough time to connect with other participants/networking? What was your least favourite aspect (to complement the favourite aspect question)?

Questions regarding long(er)-term impact

Do you anticipate your participation in this hackathon will affect your future research? Would you attend a similar event? What would you expect to be the follow up to this hackathon? How do you think NSF can meaningfully support any new ideas or collaborations that have arisen from this hackathon?
