Write better docs #4

The README is a little outdated and not very detailed. I want to have a book, which goes over different scenarios, but also works as a quick guide for developers to get started.

closing, since it's not actionable. I added a new docs infrastructure in 0.4.0, and what's left is to add comments in code and extend existing ones. That, though, feels more like an ongoing effort...
