Delete files in /Users/your_username/Documents/Blackb0x and try again.

Did you resolve this?

villyg commented 2 years ago

I just tried it. It is now stuck on the bottom screen. It says: patching (null) and it doesn't move further

Can you delete the files in /Users/your_username/Documents/Blackb0x/ and try again?

I do it every time. that's how I get around the "downloading firmware components" but now I get stuck here

It looks like your Apple TV is in recovery mode when it should be in DFU. Try a different cable/USB port to make sure it isn't disconnecting and reconnecting randomly.

Same thing here. AppleTV 3,2 (A1469). Tried deleting files in /Users/your_username/Documents/Blackb0x several times with no luck. Tried about 5 different microUSB cables. Tried 2 different computers (Mac mini running Catalina and MacBook Pro running Mojave) with every cable and still no luck. Always gets stuck as shown in the image posted by the OP.

THIS WORKED FOR ME!!! After exactly the same issue on my AppleTV 3,2 (A1469), reading and trying everything on here. I tried my own approach...

In the original instructions (as seen below) you must switch steps 4 and 3 and enter your ATV into DFU mode** after launching Blackb0x! Then choose/click on your ATV in Blackb0x and click on Install Jailbreak. That's it, works every time and doesn't when using the original jailbreak instructions.. ;)

  1. Plug in your Apple TV via micro-USB AND plug in the power cable.
  2. Open Blackb0x - Right click Blackb0x.app then click Open (Important)
  3. Click Jailbreak.
  4. Follow instructions to enter DFU mode (these instructions will not show up if done before clicking on jailbreak)
  5. Once Jailbreak has finished installing connect to your tv and wait 5-10 minutes until Kodi appears (Be patient, go have a coffee).

**To enter ATV into DFU, on ATV remote press DOWN and MENU until flashes rapidly then MENU and PLAY until flashes rapidly. (about 5 seconds for each of the presses, also, your ATV will disappear and reappear in Blackb0x when entering it into DFU)

Now as far as what this really does to my ATV is simply nothing for any additional functionality. Looking at my piHole's DNS queries - the new Jailbroken ATV sends out requests for sites like mirrors.kodi.tv and some of the author's personal sites for my guess tracking their jailbroken devices... but in terms of functionality, nothing actually loads additional on the main menu like KODI or any other TV apps.

I've tried this on both FW versions that can currently be manually installed on ATV 3,2 and downloaded here:

7.3 | (8.4.2) released on 13 May 2019 7.7 | (8.4.4) released on 26 Apr 2021

I simply wanted to give more use/life for this ATV 3,2 but looks like it will never see any more use unfortunately :/

Then I turned on my Xbox One X and installed KODI 18.9 straight out of the app store... lol! And also found a guide how get it installed on my ATV 4K on KODI's website

I wouldn't get too disappointed if nothing works for you, it's a 10 year old device and Amazon Fire TVs/Sticks have become very inexpensive these days...

I guess it was worth a try... killing a half a day... maybe not... ;)

I just want to add that I did a recovery to update to the latest firmware and then left it plugged in so it never fully updated. Make sure it fully working with wifi before jailbreaking. I also put it in dfu mode before starting Blackbox and it went through fine. This is a bit fiddly for sure but looks like it worked.
