Is this an update of #409 ?

Please update this PR with a meaningful title and an explanation of the proposed changes, along with adequate information so that we can do a complete review.

One more request: if this is truly intended as code to be merged with the core StoryMapJS, please let us know here the goals and plan so we can assess whether it seems suitable for merge.

If we don't hear from someone in the next few days, I'll assume that this PR was accidentally opened on the wrong GitHub repo and we'll close it.
