I had the same problem.
solved it by disabling Dynamic lightning, marks on walls and high quality sky
in game options menu
now i still get occasional lags but it isnt unplayable anymore.
btw i'm playing on 856x480 with high details and lightmaps reducing the details
would probably help against those lags

A new version will add some benchmark options and will disable lightmaps by
default (unless you enable it of course). In timedemos on my Nexus One (should
be similar on the Desire) I got a 25% performance boost by disabling lightmaps.
With sound I get 25fps in demo four (quite impressive) and without 28.4fps. In
a real game (except for the demo map) the fps should typically be above 30.
Input performance is related to mouse performance. Only when a frame is done,
new input events will be processed.
