Describe the bug

When using nvidia-open-dkms on a kernel built with Thin LTO, binutils fails at the stripping part with: strip: BFD (GNU Binutils) 2.42.0 assertion fail /usr/src/debug/binutils/binutils-gdb/bfd/elf.c:4131

This issue is not present, when using the closed source dkms package. That also results into a compiled dkms module, but booting into the desktop wont work. SDDM or/and KDE wont launch with it.

To Reproduce

Compiler: LLVM Clang 17.0.6 Binutils: 2.39-1 GCC: 14.1.1

  1. Add following Kernel Config Variables: scripts/config -e LTO -e LTO_CLANG -e ARCH_SUPPORTS_LTO_CLANG -e ARCH_SUPPORTS_LTO_CLANG_THIN -d LTO_NONE -e HAS_LTO_CLANG -d LTO_CLANG_FULL -e LTO_CLANG_THIN -e HAVE_GCC_PLUGINS
  2. Enable IAS support to kernel build: 
        CC=clang
    LD=ld.lld
    LLVM=1
    LLVM_IAS=1
  3. Compile kernel
  4. Let the DKMS Module compile

Should be fixed as soon https://github.com/dell/dkms/pull/417 is merged. Closing here since not a NVIDIA bug.
