New release/tag? #232

Hello,

Thanks for developing Nagios and NRPE and releasing them to the community.

I'm the new maintainer for NRPE in the Fedora packaging ecosystem (Fedora releases, plus EPEL7 and EPEL8 serving EL7/8 users). There currently isn't a tagged 4.0.2 release on github where we like to pull canonical sources from to build packages. Also, recent commits seem to be security related (buffer overflow fixes).

We're working on fixing an SELinux issue that we're aware of; I posted on that bug.

I'd like to get NRPE 4.x support into our ecosystem for its TLS 1.3 support; one option for me is to pull a snapshot of a branch at a particular commit/date. It would be easier to pull a tagged release tarball; it's also possible for me to pull a snapshot and later replace it with a proper release. Since you're upstream, I also don't want to do this without at least consulting you first (since the release would most likely be reported as nrpe-4.0.0+git commit/date), which may result in issues being posted here.

Given the deprecation notice, I wanted to ask about the possibility of getting a formal release to package with the most recent commits. If this is not coming, would you be open to me releasing a snapshot for the Fedora/EL ecosystem?

Thanks for your time and attention.

Hi, thanks for reaching out!

There should be a 4.0.1 release out, but the tag seems to be missing. Not sure what happened there.

We're planning to release 4.0.2 sometime this or next week. I'll make sure there's a tagged release/tarball/etc. available.

Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for the new tag and work to package that version when it becomes available. Looking forward to it!
