My laptop let me set the top row of keys to be F-keys in the bios, so I'm good there. But I use my external keyboard (Apple wireless) much more often and it eschews F-keys in favor of "volume down" and other essentials. Theoretically, I could fake an F-key press using the Fn modifier. But it's not as easy, especially in a game, as hitting a common sequence like Control-G.

Some new keyboards don't even have a Fn key option, for example some of the cheaper Chromebooks I've seen.
