Unfortunatelly this is not specific to german. It applies to most other
languages besides english including spanish, french, italian, and also slavic
languages such as slovak, czech, polish,. These are the languages where I know
the alphabet. I am afraid there are many more languages where this is
applicable thus if this can be addressed as soon as possible many many many
people would get a chance to become more productive. Now the only workaround to
type accented letters is by relying on auto correction what is not omniscient
unfortunatelly.Enter your comments

The priority on this issue should be high. Not having accents and other special
characters is like not having a complete alphabet as these characters affect
meaning in languages that use them. Autocorrect catches most problems, but it
misses a significant number (e.g., in Spanish words like "continúo,"
"continuo," and "continuó"). I don't feel that I can conduct work related
communication on my device until this issue is fixed.

This is already addressed however this issue does not track current state.
When running Android 4.1, Android 4.2, Android 4.3 and Android 4.4, we can use
Google Keyboard which allows us to long press a letter. As the additional
characters bubble appears above the original long pressed character, we can
explore that area by touch and get feetback as we are about to enter an
accented character.
Since Android 5.0 AOSP keyboard also includes this improvement.
Other Android device vendors shipping their own keyboards also addressed this
in a similar way. For issues using 3rd party keyboards you need to check how it
works and change keyboard of your choice.
