It is perhaps better to recommend setting the CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX to /usr/local, that way you get a more consistent file structure.
Regarding Qt. Qt can also be installed from source, which is probably a more generic way of installing it (although package-systems are preferable if they exists). I can provide a section on this
