One Word Feedback #4

Overall, this is a well-written piece with an authentic voice. Revise your initial assertion with something more interesting and universal. The comparison isn’t a strong enough signal to follow. Otherwise, this is an interesting piece with an added twist to the classic “your mother” joke. Sorry, granny. Again, genuine, your voice and tone come through in your writing — well done.

When I think about a word, that triggers a negative response in me, it’s got to be: INTERESTING. You might be a little confused right now and I agree. Let me explain this as an artist. The word “interesting” in the English language may not have the same connotation as in Czech. Here, it’s just an inch away from calling something “weird “. It’s just supposed to be the more optimistic way of looking at things you don’t fully understand. Or when you want to sugarcoat something, you don’t like that much.

What I mean by that are those awkward social interactions when you perhaps made something that you poured your heart into, and this is the response you got. That small moment of silence. Then the air thickens. And the other person has no idea, what to tell you about that so-called MASTERPIECE you just made. So, they simply say: “OH, interesting… “ But what most people mean by that (well, not always, but bear with me) is something like: „Uh…I do not share your emotional investment in this. “

OR “I just don’t understand it at all, and I don’t care. I’ll just give you a short answer and we can keep going. “

OR “Well. I do not like this at all, but I want to be polite about it. I don’t want to hurt your feelings. “

“That’s interesting. “ They might mumble and change the subject fairy quickly.

Does it always mean they are not sincere? No, some people using this word, may be really interested in something you made. But if they just give you this short answer and then immediately go somewhere else, they are usually not.

But if they truly meant it, they would ask you a few questions. Heck, it they are not a fan of your work, they can still try to see your point of view. People can still be supportive of something they don’t fully understand. Or maybe they can give you some useful criticism. But if they just say “interesting“ and throw it from the window in the speed of lighting, it might be a „That’s weird“ dressed in a nice pair of shoes. Or in a that cozy sweater they got from their good old granny. And you like their grannie’s cookies, don’t you? So just shut your month, eat your cookies, and let me change the “interesting” subject really quickly.

Hello Justin, I’m so sorry, your message got a bit lost. I don’t use this gmail very often and I had no idea the github will be sending me your feedback like this. Thank you for your answer. I have rewritten the beginning part of "One word" and made the corrections you asked me to do. https://github.com/NatNight99/english-for-designers/blob/main/01_one_word/index.md

I have also solved the problems in "Content first" - mainly the pictures (which were not suitable for the format the github likes at all, but it is done). I presented my revision of this before Christmas. If you have any notes you want to give me I can still make changes. We did not have time to speak about it before.

I’m sorry, I will not be attending your online Zoom. I was present for the most of your lessons. And I did present my revision in person. I really don’t have time tomorrow. I think it’s for the best if we message each other in this way. We did speak quite a lot online before I presented the revision, so I think I made all the big necessary changes. https://github.com/NatNight99/english-for-designers/blob/main/03_content_first/My_work.md

And could you please tell me when are you going to give us the school credit for our work? I’m just checking to be sure. We talked about it with my friend, I don’t want to sound unpolite.

Thank you for your help.

Best regards.

When I think about a word, that triggers a negative response in me, it’s got to be: INTERESTING. You might be a little confused right now and I agree. Let me explain this as an artist. It’s just supposed to be the more optimistic way of looking at things you don’t fully understand. Or when you want to sugarcoat something, you don’t like that much.

Edits:

  • Avoid use of all caps, use sentence case instead with formatting that doesn’t change the case but instead of the meaning, such as emphasis rather than yelling
  • Remove comma after “word” in your lead-in sentence
  • Update “it’s got” to “ it has”
  • Add comma after “right now”
  • Update punctuation, move period inside quote instead of outside
  • Consider removing the difference between the Czech and English, it’s not significant enough, as interesting means the same, it can mean “weird” (That’s really interesting) or as a filler for the word “right,” (Interesting, tell me more) etc. depending on the context
  • Remove “just” (filler adverb, and remember what Just by Brad Frost)

For example:

When I think about a word that triggers a negative response in me, it has to be interesting. You might be a little confused right now, and I agree. Let me explain this as an artist. (Discuss its various uses and meanings here.) It’s supposed to be the more optimistic way of looking at things you don’t fully understand. Edits:

  • Update “by that are” to “by that is”
  • Avoid use of all caps, use sentence case instead with formatting that doesn’t change the case but instead of the meaning, such as emphasis rather than yelling
  • Use sentence for "Oh" or use "Ooh" to add the exclamation, add meaning without all caps
  • Update quote style from „“ to ““
  • Consider joining “That small moment of silence, then the air thickens.” to avoid an incomplete sentence “Then the air thickens.”
  • Remove comma after “no idea”
  • Consider a comma instead of colon for dialogue, for visual flow to feel more like a conversation rather than an explicit example
  • Add a space after ellipsis in “Uh… I”
  • Remove the single space after the period in your dialogue

For example:

What I mean by that is those awkward social interactions when you perhaps made something that you poured your heart into, and this is the response you got. That small moment of silence, then the air thickens. And the other person has no idea what to tell you about that so-called masterpiece you just made.

Edits:

  • Avoid use of all caps, use sentence case instead with formatting that doesn’t change the case but instead of the meaning, such as emphasis rather than yelling
  • Update typo: "fairy" to "fairly"
  • Remove the single space after the period in your dialogue

For example:

Or “I just don’t understand it at all, and I don’t care. I’ll just give you a short answer and we can keep going.“

Or “Well. I do not like this at all, but I want to be polite about it. I don’t want to hurt your feelings.“

“That’s interesting.“ They might mumble and change the subject fairy quickly.

Does it always mean they are not sincere? No, some people using this word, may be really interested in something you made. But if they just give you this short answer and then immediately go somewhere else, they are usually not.

Edits:

  • Add comma after "answer" and shorten "and then" to "then"
  • Update "No, some people using this word, may be really interested in something you made." to "No. Some people use this word because they really are interested in something you said." for better flow
  • Update something you "made" to "said"

Does it always mean they are not sincere? No. Some people use this word because they really are interested in something you said. But if they just give you this short answer, then immediately go somewhere else, they are usually not.

So just shut your month, eat your cookies, and let me change the “interesting” subject really quickly.

Edits:

  • The bolded text above in your lead-in sentence is a potential flag for AI language patterns. Consider revising it to sound less predictable (cliché), update “few” to “some,” from “they would ask you a few question” to “they would ask you some more questions.” to sound more natural, etc.
  • Consider “actually” instead of “truly,” or remove the adverb
  • Update quote style from „“ to ““
  • Update “Heck, it” to “Heck, if”
  • Consider “decent” instead of “useful” to better match your voice of tone
  • Update typo: “month” to “mouth”
  • Remove “just” in “But if they just say” — too many instances of “just” elsewhere, don’t overuse
  • Consider separating the last sentence for an extra formatting and takeaway punch

But if they actually meant it, they would ask you some more questions. Heck, if they are not a fan of your work, they can still try to see your point of view.
