interface for visual browsing of images #339

Create a 'browse the gallery' entry point for those who want to explore the database out of curiosity or to get a sense of what all it contains, based on visual search.

Examples: http://www.inventingeurope.eu/objects/ and http://uredb.reading.ac.uk/cgi-bin/ure/uredb.cgi and https://www.moma.org/collection/works

At the moment we have something approximating this in the 'Gallery' tab to view a search result (for example http://data.nhm.ac.uk/dataset/collection-specimens/resource/05ff2255-c38a-40c9-b657-4ccb55ab2feb?view_id=6ba121d1-da26-4ee1-81fa-7da11e68f68e) but it is POST search, not PRE search, and is not randomised in any way to provide a sense of the breadth and variety of the digital collections.

We really need some image categories to develop some of these features but I really like the examples. Some of the image search features on Google Image search would also be useful. Would put MAM to shame!

The Ure Museum example is horrendously ugly, but that's because they are stubbornly sticking to their 'rust' theme colours, and have taken all of their object photos on weird lime green backgrounds - I think that the effect of our rather gorgeous specimens on clean white backgrounds will look quite good with this treatment. The key is to serve it up with an algorithm that mixes them up from as wide a range of categories as possible.

(Except for MoMa, myself and my business partner Brian Fuchs were involved in both of these)
