BackdropCMS evaluation as an option to support ongoing development and security of scratchpads beyond D7 EOL 1 Nov 2023 [UPDATED] #10

Overview At NHM we are developing several options as part of a roadmap, for supporting, enhancing and extending scratchpads into the future.

Backdrop CMS is a fork of Drupal 7, and therefore has a direct defined migration path from Drupal 7.

Therefore, it can mean that we can address the security factors associated with Drupal 7 going end of life on 28 November 2022.

The expectation to be confirmed is that, being a fork, Backdrop CMS can be a drop-in replacement to Drupal 7, offering minimal re-development requirements such that custom code for scratchpads can be reused directly.

However evaluation is needed to help us understand what's really involved. For example, adjustments to our scratchpads custom Drupal modules to now run within Backdrop CMS. An initial bonus is that this process is well documented in Backdrop CMS's online documentation and we also have the Packpub publications on the subject! :)

I'd say we'd be looking to offer this solution alongside others and we'd be looking to create a new git repo here on github, open to collaboration, or at least, for observing our progress.
