Formerly called Scratchpads Re-development. Renamed to Scratchpads Evolution to represent an ongoing development approach, where real development evaluation and prototyping can happen sooner and in parallel with the current Scratchpads 2 platform.
Aim: Creating a Scratchpad that would act as a search engine, editor, and server of a freely accessible bibliography of every taxonomic paper recorded across all Scratchpads.
Justification: We have been discussing the need of having a Bibliography of Life (BoL) for the past 12 years (since 2010), and we still don't have it. Bibliographic references remain siloed across Scratchpads and are neither aggregated nor served back for purposes such as transferring references among Scratchpads and citing references while writing text in Taxon Description or Publication content types.
Implementation:
This Scratchpad should be created directly in our target Drupal version. Doing so will serve to test bibliography migration between the existing Drupal Biblio Module and the proposed BibCite Module. The BibCite Module is intended for Drupal 8 or higher.
Initial population and testing of the BoL Scratchpad using a new Drupal can be done with the contents of the Myriatrix literature database, which uses Drupal 7 and the old Biblio Module. The results will allow to preliminarily assess literature migration challenges between Drupal 7-based Scratchpads and the next Scratchpads Drupal version and biblio module.
As soon as feasible, migrate Myriatrix to the new Drupal and start assessing the interoperability between it and the BoLS. Interoperability must include authority control of bibliographic references creation and editing, as well as proper deduplication and merging procedures between source Scratchpads and BoLS. We will base the work in the principles outlined by King et al. (2011).
The BoLS should also be made as interoperable as possible with Wikidata. WD data properties should be reused as field labels whenever possible, to reduce the mapping burden for developers (coders and non-coders). When reuse is not possible, equivalence should be made visually evident, e.g., by displaying text with the corresponding Wikidata property when hovering over data fields in the editor overlay.
Testing citation of the BoLS is to be carried in newly migrated Scratchpads, using the [bib] tag in Taxon Descriptions and the cite button in Publications. At this stage, merging the [bib] tag functionality into the cite button should be considered, as they are redundant and the cite button is more user-friendly.
