Description:

Many of today's journal have article numbers rather than issues and pagination. For example, the follow article is article number 93, but there is no logical place to list that number for the journal article. I have been putting such numbers under pagination, but that is misleading. Would be possible to add a place for article numbers for publications of this sort listed in bibliographies?

Though some journals have replaced indexing articles from pagination to article number, this has not yet been incorporated into major bibliographic formats (bibtex etc). As both numbers indicate the position of an article within a certain issue, they can be presented in the same field.

My suggestion is to continue using the pagination as for the purposes of indicating 'article number' and add this in the description/title of the field.

As Dimitris says, I don't think there is much the Scratchpads can do at the moment until a standard is agreed upon. Interestingly, entering the DOI for that article into a Scratchpad results in 93 being entered into the Issue field:

I'd keep it in the issue field.

Pagination has potential use for micro-citations (as in the eMonocot project).
