Enable existing site links in content to work with new *.myspecies.info domain (was: Links to references and pages not working) #6499

Closed REHarbach closed 2 years ago

REHarbach commented 2 years ago

This issue was reported twice before (previously issue 6480) because many visitors to the site have reported it to me. The issue is that thousands of internal links to references, etc. are not working. As an example, prior to moving to "myspecies" the following link "http://mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.info/simpletaxonomy/term/6061 worked. I replaced this with "https://mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.myspecies.info/simpletaxonomy/term/6061" and it works. To resolve this problem, it seems it is necessary to insert "myspecies." before info. in thousands of links. I could to this manually, but it would take an inordinate amount of time. Surely, the problem can be fixed easily with programming.

REHarbach commented 2 years ago

For clarity, as far as I know, this issue only applies to links within taxon pages chosen from the main drop-down menu items. For example, on the page for Culicidae under the Culicidae menkus (https://mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.myspecies.info/simpletaxonomy/term/6045), a click on Linnaeus, 1758 takes you to a blocked "http://mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.info/systema-naturae-regna-tria-naturae-secundum-classes-ordines-genera-species-cum-characteribus-differe". Thus, it is not only "info/" that needs to be replaced for internal links to references are taxon pages, but the "http:" needs to be changed to "https:".

Thank you @REHarbach I will be looking at this first week back in January.

Good morning @REHarbach I will be looking into this for you this week.

therobyouknow commented 2 years ago

Good morning @REHarbach

There is a known solution for your issue, technically known as a rewrite rule. What this does is can do in this case is to rewrite web address requests incoming to our servers to the new URL with myspecies.

3 things we would need to do:

  1. determine if we have done this for other sites, to re use that procedure.
  2. determine that we can apply this specifically and only to this site
  3. write the rule. I'm familiar with doing this

Cc @benscott for input on item 1 above: ensuring that the rule applies to this site only. Thinking about: aegir. But if there is a vhost .conf file for this site specifically as I might expect, then the rule can be added there.

If it hasn't been done before, this could be something reusable for other sites, as I'd imaging there might be a few in the same situation after migrating to myspecies.info

Procedure notes:

issue title was: "Links to references and pages not working" - changed to reflect task required.

REHarbach commented 2 years ago

Thank you for this, but it is gobble-gook for me. Perhaps I should explain that my site was one of the very first sites to be developed, using a unique format not used for standard Scratchpads. As the site developed, I chose to manually link references and other pages in the text pages. That is apparently why the "myspecies" suffix was not added to them when the site was moved to myspecies. I manually added the links because the system was confusing publications in the same year by the same author. As I mentioned before, I could go through the entire site and manually change all of the links. I tested this and it works. The problem is that it would take a very long time to do this for the entire site.

If you think the solution that you proposed will work without causing other problems for the site, then please give it a try. However, if you have any doubts, I will begin the process of manually changing the links. I assume if you execute the solution and it doesn't work or causes other problems that it can be revered. Please let me know if you choose to proceed.

Thank you.

Good morning Ralph, yes the proposed rewrite solution is reversible should we need to remove it.

If you change some URLs manually, these won't be affected by our above solution. Though I understand that there are a lot to change, so our proposed solution would be very helpful in providing a solution sooner.

benscott commented 2 years ago

The domain redirect should redirect http://mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.info/simpletaxonomy/term/6061 to https://mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.myspecies.info/simpletaxonomy/term/6061. That doesn't seem to be working correctly - perhaps @therobyouknow you could investigate with @REHarbach the DNS settings to see what the problem is? If that fails then all the content links can be changed, but that's much more work.

REHarbach commented 2 years ago

Dear Ben,

As I explained to Roberta, everything in the site redirects to the myspecies except the links to references and other pages contained in the individual pages. All of those links were added manually by myself, which I chose to do because there were problems with automatic links wrongly linking reference of the same year by the same author. I can change all of the links manually to include "myspecies", but this will take a very long time.

I assume you and Roberta are working together on this problem. Please let me know if I can help in any way.

Regards,

Ralph

Hello @REHarbach not sure who is Roberta. Myself, I am Robert Davis, the Research Software Engineer at Natural History Museum in London, working with Ben Scott.

I think my solution for a rewrite rule can still be applicable, based on what I have read from Ben and yourself in your comments here.

therobyouknow commented 2 years ago

@REHarbach can you send all your DNS setup information which include web forwarding please. Then we can look at this and determine the remaining configuration to do for the site sub pages to work, including the one mentioned above which isn't working.

REHarbach commented 2 years ago

What is the DNS setup information? I have no idea what this is, or "web forwarding". Please explain or let me know where to find it.

Dear Ben and Robert,

The Mosquito Taxonomic Inventory is set up to be redirected. That is not the problem. As I have explained several times, all of the links in the taxon pages were manually made by me, using the original URLs for each reference or page. To convert them to the myspepcies system, I would have to go through ever page and manually correct the URL. I have a master list of the publication with their URLs. I have recently done a global replacement in that list so that the the URLs are now in the myspecies format. I replaced a few URLs to ensure that the global replacements were correct. They were; thus, I could spend weeks and weeks replacing all of the links, but wouldn't it be better if it could be done all at once with some programming command or application. Sorry, I don't know the proper programming lingo, but I think you probably understand what I am trying to say.

I really would like to get the site back to being fully functional. If there is not an easy fix, then let me know and I will make the necessary changes to the site one at a time for as long as it takes.

Best wishes,

Ralph

Good morning Ralph, @REHarbach

Following up on this to resolve this issue for you. Sorry about it being drawn out.

To recap there are the following domains (in other words the website address or URL):

  1. mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.info
  2. mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.myspecies.info

Can you send me the all settings for mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.info domain please? I expand what I mean here below.

mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.info is a domain registered with registrar godaddy. When this domain was registered with them, an account with them would have been created to login to pay for the registration and have it point to mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.myspecies.info You would therefore have login details into godaddy for those purposes. The domain is due for renewal in 2023 so you would also need the same login details for when that time comes next year.

Can you use these login details to get into your godaddy account and screenshot the settings that were originally setup to point mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.info to mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.myspecies.info - please email them to me if you can, rather than post them here. Then we can come up with proposals to adjust what we can adjust there to achieve exactly what you need. There are other possible routes to getting you what you need should we find limitations with this approach. I'm confident we can do this for you in some way exactly how you want and completely, without your having to update each web address in the content.

Note, only for info, that I got the basic, publicly available registration information i.e. registrar and renewal data from central lookup here: https://lookup.icann.org/lookup

Thank you, Rob

Dear Rob,

I assume that the information I sent to you for the Mosquito Taxonomic Inventory domain was of no use to change the internal links to myspecies links, or has this issue been put aside? If the problem cannot be fixed, please let me know so that I can manually change the links in all of the pages.

Regards,

Ralph
