I tend to use KISS in the same way as Dmenu; searching for apps, rather than using shortcut icons. Adding a feature where a sole result of a search is automatically opened would greatly enhance my experience.
Where a search term returns a single app, contact, or shortcut, that should automatically be opened/selected a'la this patch for dmenu.
To automatically perform a web search, perhaps a search could be prefixed by a '!' DuckDuckGo do something similar.
Where a search doesn't yield any results, and is not prefixed by a '!', the current behaviour should stand.
