Feedback requested: Store description update #1486

Hello everyone!

The Play Store / fDroid description have been there for 5 years now (KISS will soon be 9 years old! We built so much since this scrawny app built on Eclipse started on a689af79).

With @saveman71, @Amoki and @geekuillaume we worked on a new version, here is our current proposition:

https://github.com/Neamar/KISS/blob/00a4238692f8a3911f5bcf6fa1aff62cdca00130/fastlane/metadata/android/en-US/full_description.txt#L1-L23

Do you feel we're missing something? None of us are English native, is there anything that sounds incorrect?

We also updated the screenshots, see https://github.com/Neamar/KISS :)

(I've asked Weblate to add a new component for Fastlane, we'll be able to translate this in all the languages we collectively talk!) (and @saveman71 built a tool in #1479 to localize the screenshots too )

I remember using Summon ß on my Jellybean device Lol... I was in grade 8 then

TBog commented 4 years ago

This is not in my skillset and so I can only say ok.

ntninja commented 4 years ago

I just received notification from WebLate and translated the description faithfully to German. Some notes:

Other things:

Neamar commented 4 years ago

I dropped this sentence, sine I really don't know what I'm supposed to do with it:

That's fair. I got some good feedback from it, so I'll keep in English, but I agree it's kinda weird.

I changed the top enumeration to only feature a single adjective at the start of each item :+1:

I've added KRunner ;) And made the smiley an actual smiley, cause it's 2020 and Unicode support should be everywhere.

Regarding changelogs: this is a Play Store limitation. I can't up the limit :( Fdroid doesn't have the limit, and historically I've only been using those files for fdroid (Play Store releases were manual). So in the future, they'll be below 500 characters, and I can't change that :\

Regarding help.kisslauncher.com: that's not planned for now :)

Neamar commented 4 years ago

You also asked why full_description is different on weblate: I was curious about this, and found out that a user named Kingu on Weblate https://hosted.weblate.org/user/kingu/ (maybe @comradekingu on Github?) changed the description directly. This hasn't been committed yet to Github by Weblate.

Although this is obviously open to suggestions, for now I'm going to revert the change. @comradekingu sorry for reverting your change! Can we talk more about changes to the master translation here?

comradekingu commented 4 years ago

@Neamar I didn't think there was any debate in the matter. What do you think I left out? To me it was all the same in less amount of text. Edit: Everything else is done like that, so it seems out of character that the app desc should be so verbose.

Neamar commented 4 years ago

First off, thanks for your help!

I'm not against making things cleaner / shorter, and want to clarify that for now the revert is just to avoid conflicts with changes I had made before.

Now, let's go more in depth with the changes (and I'm also gonna summon @saveman71 and @sandoche for their opinion)

For context, we're talking about the green sections here: image

I'd say the verbiage in the first section is to get in line with other apps on the store. I'm not a big fan of this, but I think it makes sense to get marketing talk rather than efficient communication to "rope the user in". That was the main reason for the 4 bullet points.

I don't have any opinion on the added links to Alfred etc., don't feel strongly either way

However, even if it's technically less precise I think "open-source" is easier to understand for readers than copyleft libre software. I kept getting emails asking if KISS was open-source, and that's why I added this section :)

comradekingu commented 4 years ago

If not this, what are the things to communicate? I much prefer adding a line to explain what libre software is to this attempted strategy of being indistinguishable from other apps. Bullet-point ALL CAPS are going away. No big apps have that. The least KISS thing is to explain why it is that way, and what that is. I see no benefit.

ntninja commented 4 years ago

I see. Can you mark the old entries as non-translatable in this case, so that they don't show up as “needs translation” in every language?

Also please try to stay below 400 characters for the english changelog in general (like you did with the most recent entry) as the german written version always has more characters than the english one and I need the breathing room to not start truncating entries.

I don't have any opinion on the added links to Alfred etc., don't feel strongly either way

I don't think the links add any value here, people either recognize the name or they move on. If they see the link they might be tempted to click on it thinking that it may somehow be about the relationship of KISS to that product or something.

I still have some suggestions for that list however:

However, even if it's technically less precise I think "open-source" is easier to understand for readers than copyleft libre software. I kept getting emails asking if KISS was open-source, and that's why I added this section :)

How about “free libre open-source”, instead of just “open-source”?

comradekingu commented 4 years ago

Notwithstanding errors, I think the point should be made without mentioning equivalent ideas/programs. I thought those names was there for the searches, but then again I don't know what "Alfred" is either. Had to look up many of those.

I think cutting it down to something that all works will additionally be the proof that is in the pudding, and that the KISS launcher can live on reputation. No software I know of says it is "kinda like x".

Lets not throw more words into the salad. "Open Source" is a trademark that isn't written "open-source", that illustrates a point for why this isn't good in English, and it fails in translation too, as "source code that is in the open", is the (non-trademarked) translation. You didn't know, so why should anyone really?

Copyleft adds one protection to libre, which is a good term, because it is not encumbered with the OSI (who attempt to not focus on freedom), and the FSF (which booted out RMS). It is more precise, and it has additional value over just being open/libre.

"Use, see, change and share at will, with all." explains copyleft adequately. Could add a link to Wikipedia too.

Neamar commented 4 years ago

I agree about naming competitors, this does make sense. I think what I had in mind here was that people may be searching for this, and those are pretty good keywords to get people interested in the launcher.

I don't know about mentioning translated languages. Is there some kind of automated function for this?

sandoche commented 4 years ago

I like the short description but I'll keep the open-source.

comradekingu commented 4 years ago

@sandoche It never was "open-source", it was briefly "open sorce", and then "Open Source", a trademarked term. It holds no protection when translated, and is indistinguishable from non-commercial software with collaborative opened source code models (like Vivaldi). It is also encumbered with the OSI. Hoping people don't directly translate it has never worked anywhere that I have seen.

"Libre" is unencumbered by the FSF. Also, "Free software" is a lost cause now that "freeware" isn't being used". From what I have seen "free software" introduces errors in translation.

comradekingu commented 4 years ago

@sandoche I don't know what your take is, but there are many projects opting for "copylefted libre software", albeit my list is mostly a selection of my doing since those are the one I could think of. https://yunohost.org/#/whatsyunohost https://github.com/TeamNewPipe/NewPipe/ https://remmina.org https://weblate.org/en/ https://hosted.weblate.org/translate/jirafeau/master/en/?checksum=1d64c1d2f95f81c0 https://www.blender.org/about/license/ https://ghini.github.io/faq/ / https://readthedocs.org/projects/ghinidesktop-docsi18n-ptbr/downloads/pdf/ghini-1.0-dev/ https://github.com/ndfred/iperf-ios

All of these are doing great, and markedly better when information is streamlined.

https://github.com/Neamar/KISS/blob/master/fastlane/metadata/android/en-US/full_description.txt vs https://github.com/Neamar/KISS/blob/5ae856dfbd9521a084355e4364e5fa85292b8282/fastlane/metadata/android/en-US/full_description.txt

is 256 words, vs 115(!) I invite anyone to find a single thing that is better in the 256 word version, or anything that can reasonably be omitted from the 115. That is an experiment anyone can run at best in English. The effect is also the 115 will be better and more available in other languages over time, seeing as it is much easier to translate.

3 translations currently https://hosted.weblate.org/translate/kiss/fastlane/nb_NO/?q=state%3Aempty&offset=1#translations and they all have exectly the same errors as the original, and the errors in translation I predicted.

sandoche commented 4 years ago

@comradekingu I do like "copylefted libre software"!

comradekingu commented 4 years ago

@sandoche Nice, can #1521 be merged, and then I can get to trying to improve the website? Everything can be revisited if more improvements are found, but it seems like a good step up to me for now.

Neamar commented 4 years ago

Alright, I'm merging. Sorry it took me a long time but I wanted to think about it and be sure of the end result, since it's the start of the funnel and is probably way more important than adding new features or fixing bugs.

Thanks, @comradekingu !

Neamar commented 4 years ago

(I'll send the changes to live with the next release)

licaon-kter commented 3 years ago

Is Fastlane on Weblate too?

KISS is translated (2 missing strings now anyway) but there's no fastlane/ro-RO for my locale!?

comradekingu commented 3 years ago

@licaon-kter You can add Romanian in https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/kiss/fastlane/ I'm not an admin for KISS, but the language consistency plugin adds missing components automatically.

Neamar commented 3 years ago

(I didn't know about the automatic import! Since I'm not an admin either [we're on the free plan for FOSS projects], I asked an admin to add us a few months ago. Looking forward to the Romanian translation then!)

licaon-kter commented 3 years ago

Added. Note that I don't bother with changelogs :)

Neamar commented 3 years ago

That makes sense for the changelogs!

I see you translated the screenshots, thanks! I have a question about that. I tried marking them as "high priority" (priority:150) since they were appearing after the changelogs and were easy to miss, but I don't think it worked: for other languages, I'm still seeing them at the very end and I'm afraid most translators will miss them :( How did you find them? Was it hard for you to notice them?

licaon-kter commented 3 years ago

I pressed next to skip changelogs, no magic there

Neamar commented 3 years ago

Damit. I was hoping with the priority, they'd appear before the changelogs.

comradekingu commented 3 years ago

Works in my locale(™) https://hosted.weblate.org/zen/kiss/fastlane/nb_NO/?q=

licaon-kter commented 3 years ago

@Neamar You are right, they appear first,

Neamar commented 3 years ago

AMAZING

Thanks both of you :)

comradekingu commented 3 years ago

@Neamar I confused us. I am not a "project maintainer" for KISS (nor an admin for Hosted), but since you are a project maintainer for KISS it should be in https://hosted.weblate.org/addons/kiss/strings/

Neamar commented 3 years ago

Nice! Added.

Maybe we'll be able to translate the website too then at some point 😀 On Jan 25, 2021, 14:02 +0100, Allan Nordhøy notifications@github.com, wrote:
