That was my initial thought too. But if Sia has become ubiquitously known in other languages as something else (for example 細亞, the current translation for Sia in Traditional Chinese), it seems okay to keep it. The key IMO is ubiquity.
This question seems to primarily affect non-Latin alphabet based languages. It would be nice to get feedback from members of our community too before changing anything.
I would translate it as advised by the translators. In the case of Chinese, I think we should definitely be using the translated characters that they are presenting. For other languages, keeping it as 'Sia' probably makes the most sense. And if we are keeping 'Sia', then we should probably keep 'Siacoin' and 'Siafund' as well.
I'm translating zh-hans.yaml
tonight. And I noticed this problem. In Chinese communities, the SC(Siacoin) is always translated to 云储币
(see Results from Google). I've never seen anyone using 細亞
except sia.tech , though it pronounced like Sia in English.
云
meanscloud
,储
meansstorage
,币
meanscoin
.
Personally, I'd suggest using 云储币
for official Chinese name of Siacoin
, while the name for Sia
project keeps unchanged. Otherwise it's quite hard for me to keep on translating.
I'd appreciate it if anyone could explain what is the name Sia
means.
definitely not, these are product names
