error reconnecting to smb1 - Never Connected

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Loading mplayer-ce & selecting SMB..
2. Properly Configuring the smb.conf file and removing the debugger option
from the mplayer.conf file.
3. Trying to acess a share on Ubuntu, FreeNAS (SMB), Windows XP, Vista Home

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect to see a directory containing xvid,dvix,mkv files etc... 

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
mplayer-ce 0.4(and previous version) on a Menu V3.2

Please provide any additional information below.
I have been working at this for a few weeks now and trying every forum and
scrap of advise I can find on forums ,but to know avail ... 

Basically the problem is when I try to load SMB share I am immediately
greeted with an "error reconnecting to smb1"  I have attempted to change
where the share is coming from , Linux, FreeBSD, Windows. I have also
attempted numerous configuration settings and disabling debugging. The
internet is being connected to just fine(web-radio) and my router is
showing the Wii in the routing table.

I will try to help ya out as I was having the same type of issues. 
1) I assume you are connecting via WIFI.
2) Create a user on the PC that will be used by the wii to access the files, 
make 
sure that it has a password. Not blank!
3) If possible assign your wii and pc static ips.
4) Check you smb.conf file on the will to make sure that the fields are correct.

If you can please post you smb.conf and also turn on network debugging in the 
mplayer.conf file.

I have setup a NAS drive for the independent purpose of serving files up to my 
Wii.
Tryed the Static IP changing and put on the debugging. No change to situation.

You included you smb.conf and first I would recommed you do this:

#Samba share1  (smb1:/)
ip1=192.168.1.101
share1="NAS"
user1=admin 
pass1=*****

And delete the rest of the items as it can cause issues if you have part of 
them 
filled out. Also what is the message that you get when you start it with the 
network 
debug flag?

I went ahead and formated the drive because to me it feels like its not even 
trying
to connect to the smb share(Thought maybe it was not looking at the config file 
at
all so I reinstalled from a freshly formated SD card with nothing eels on it). I
tryed it with and without WEP encryption. I tryed it with only the:

& then again with only the Samba share 1 filled out. 

I am not getting a message at all regarding the network debug flag. What should 
I be
seeing?

I get the same error.

My config looks like this.

I've tried many changes on the server side, and in the config file. I know share
itself (Server side) is setup right, since I can connect to it from both 
windows and
linux(Using konqueror ,mc ,mounted ,and even mplayer in linux)

As far as i can tell it's not even attempting to make the connection on the
application side.

That is how I feel. It is like an instant reaction; not pausing for a second to
attempt to access the smb share.

that sounds like a network initialization issue. i had severe issues with a 
couple of
accespoints/wireless-routers. with most of them i could solve the problem by 
changing
the encryption type of the wifi. normally i use wpa2 aes but for my wii i have 
to use
tkip. somtimes simply changing the key to a key without special characters. i 
could
always use _.:-?/&@()! . they never caused problems but chars like {$%& and 
other
always caused problems. the first time i became aware of this behavior of the 
wii was
when i first tried to use ftpii.

Well, I'm not using encyption on this router. Plus other internet functions 
work,
radio etc... I'm begining to suspect that the samba the wii uses simply doesn't 
like
samba shares from linux. gjlopeman's NAS "probably" does it share from linux, 
and the
shares I'm trying to use are from a Linux system.

Ok for you guys that are getting a immidate error when trying smb, try one of 
the 
radio stations. If it works then you are connected and online as they are web 
stations. If it does not connect then you may need to play with the wii's 
network 
connection as your setting may be giving mplayer an issue.

Secondly are you guys using .4 or .3 or .3a? if .4 I am not able to get it to 
see my 
ethernet adapter so I am not using it and can not assure you as to what the 
network 
debug flag shows as. If you can try one of the .3 versions as it will show the 
message below the credits that would help me.

Lemme know what ya get.

@gjlopeman & DaQatz - If the radio is working then it is definitely a SMB 
issue. 
What OS are you trying to pull the video from? Linux/Mac/Win?

Also can you try to run .3a and tell me what you get when you edit mplayer.conf 
and 
uncomment the network debug line? I ask this as it will tell you specificaly if 
it 
is able to mount the share or not.

If you are using linux the please post your servers smb.conf, not the mplayer 
one as 
an attachment.

Yeah that's the strange thing, the shares work when I access them from ANYTHING 
else
besides the wii. I can access my shares from windows, and linux. I even tested 
many
different programs in linux to be sure.(Check my above posts fot the list)

Hey guys back for another round:

One thing to note is that from what I read on this forum somewhere you need to 
have
samba also use port 445.

Check on your samba server to see if it is listening on 445

CODE: netstat -an | grep 445

If it is listening on the port then check your config in comparison to mine. 
Not all
of the settings in mine are required as I also use it as a PDC and WINS server. 
Make
note that the security is user and that you have a user for the wii established 
as a
samba account. I didnt bother to try to do it with guest as I really dont like 
using
that for things other than a public area.

Tried port 445, same results.(Yes also double checked with netstat) I also 
don't see
anything else in your config that I havn't tried in mine to get it working. 
Maybe its
samba version issues? I'm running 3.0.33.

@DaQatz - You smb.conf post listed your security as share based, can you change 
it to
security and make sure that the wii user is able to access it? Also are you 
sure that
samba is listening on 445 as mine was not by default, I had to tell it to and 
change
a system file to accept the connection.

Also just throwing it out there, lets mplayer startup and wait say 2 minutes 
and then
try to connect to the share. Sometimes I dont get a connection right away when 
I use
mine and then it will come online.

keep in mind that when you switch to user security you will need to have a unix
account and a samba account on the server and as a rule of thumb make sure that 
they
are matching info.

@DaQatz - Also just scrounged up that file I had to edit, it is the inetd.conf 
file,
my samba is controlled by it so I have to add it. here are the lines.

netbios-ssn stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/samba/sbin/smbd smbd

microsoft-ds stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/samba/sbin/smbd smbd

Hmmm checking on Google seems to make me think they are part of samba... but a 
find /
| grep NAME on either doesn't seem to find them.

usages.
netstat will show 445 as microsoft-ds and 139 as netbios-ssn.

Ok looked stuff up, my system uses(optionaly) xinetd instead of inetd. I setup a
config for that should have worked the same as to what you listed above. Then I 
stop
the samba services, and restarted them with xinetd. I can access them fine from
linux, and windows same as I could before.(If I turn on ipv6 support it slows 
to a
crawl) and netstat shows the ports as listening. However the Wii still does it's
"Error reconnecting to smb#" 

I included the xinetd config below.

microsoft-ds was already listening on 445, but tried making it explicite.

I had an issue connecting to SMB share on WinXP and managed to solve it. 
Hopefully
this may help others with their SMB issues.

The issue I was seeing was as follows:
* The Wii refused to connect to my WinXP share (immediate fail).
* I could connect to the share from WinXP laptop & Linux VM.
* The Wii was also able to play content from Internet (radio working).

I did a 'netstat -an' to determine what ports the Windows machine was using and 
noted
that it was not using port 445 (SMB direct, see
http://www.keyfocus.net/kfsensor/help/AdminGuide/adm_NBT.php for more info).

I did a 'net config server' which showed the following:

Server is active on
        NetBT_Tcpip_{ED67A2DF-F605-4CC0-AB29-DEFE99824913} (005056c00008)
        NetBT_Tcpip_{5083B7B4-669B-4E96-AF68-883AB3AAA25B} (005056c00001)

(Note the lack of the NetbiosSmb device).

This indicated that the SMB direct device was disabled despite File/Print 
sharing
being enabled. I did some digging and found a registry key for enabling 
disabling
this device (see http://smallvoid.com/article/winnt-smb-netbios.html).

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet \Services \NetBT \Parameters]
SMBDeviceEnabled = 1

I changed the registry entry value from 0 to 1 and rebooted the machine. Now 
when I
do a 'netstat -an' I see:

  TCP    0.0.0.0:445            0.0.0.0:0              LISTENING
  TCP    192.168.1.3:139        0.0.0.0:0              LISTENING

and when I do a 'net config server' I see:

Server is active on
        NetbiosSmb (000000000000)
        NetBT_Tcpip_{ED67A2DF-F605-4CC0-AB29-DEFE99824913} (005056c00008)
        NetBT_Tcpip_{5083B7B4-669B-4E96-AF68-883AB3AAA25B} (005056c00001)

Problem Solved! My Wii is now able to play both audio and video files from the 
SMB
share successfully.

As an aside I have NetBios over TCP/IP disabled on the interface connected to 
the
Wii. Also looking at the firewall log I only see connections on port 445.

Some further information about my configuration:

* I am using a fixed IP for both the WinXP and Wii
* Wireless is very old 3Com ADSL router
* My smb.conf is filled out with the all fields entered and repeated 5 times

I had exactly the same problem: a samba share on a Linux server (Ubuntu 9.04) 
which
was no accessible with MPlayer CE. I managed to solve the problem by adding a 
line to
the file /etc/hosts on the Linux server. The line should be something like this:

192.168.2.4 wii

where 192.168.2.4 should be replaced by the IP of your WII (it is easier if it 
is a
fixed IP), and wii may be replaced with any name you want. 

For some reasons, when this line does no exists and the WII try to connect to 
the
samba share, the samba server contacts DNS and MDNS services, which make WII 
unhappy.

I've had the same problem. Tried messing with ports with no result. Changed the
security type from share to user, and it worked.

Try setting your samba server to 'user' level security and have a user/login 
for the
wii to connect with

also important to know is that i didn't have this problem with ubuntu intrepid, 
i
just made a dist-upgrade to jaunty before having it, intrepid didn't seem to 
need the
entrie in /etc/hosts

I played with these settings and low and behold I got it working too.  SMB 
worked on
another PC in my office so I know it wasn't a ISO I installed on the Wii.  Seems
either the registry entry or the hosts file change did it. I'm unsure.  The 
registry
entry 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet \Services \NetBT \Parameters]
SMBDeviceEnabled = 1

was not on my registry at all.  Parameters was but not SMBDeviceEnabled.  Who 
knows

Does this program work on every computer? I have been trying to find new 
computer systems to help my hard drive work a little faster. The only problem 
is, my computer is a pretty old model so not a lot of new programs work on it.
