Having the same issues here with DVD's seems like mplayer just does not like me
:P
There does not seem to be a set time limit for it freezing either, had it
happen in
just 30 seconds and other times as much as an hour in. Kinda like the issue im
havin
with the SMB play back.

One more note, all this seems to work with the .2 build but I kinda like the
new
build as it plays more resolutions. catch 22 huh, couldnt watch the movies i
had
cause .2 wont play them right but cant watch them now with .3 cause it locks.

I tried also the newest edition (0.4) of mplayer ce.
Same problem.
The DVD-Video playback optimization is really great but
unfortunately redundant if the DVD Video is freezing
after 10-20 minutes (or a code appears, which tells you to reboot the wii).
MPlayer CE 0.21d is playing DVDs without any issue.
It's the last stable edition concerning DVD-Video playback.

I'm guessing this issue is due to a lack of handling of data stream errors.
I've had
this happen to me with DVDs that are scratched to some extent or other. I'm
guessing
the code currently doesn't handle read errors properly, possibly due to the
underlying wii development libraries.
