Hello,

I was browsing my repo (nocodefunctions) and noticed you have forked it. You are learning Java, great move!

Your work really is a master piece, I'm honestly surprised its free. 3 questions how did you get so good in java, xml and somehow Web development. How I can I get that good using eclipse Ide and what are your secrets.

Do you really think, we'll ever need the Arctic archive project?

No clue about that!

Great questions. I am in the process of developing new skills (backup, setup of payment system, quality testing) in order to create a paying app (still fully with Java). I intend to write a blog post to share advice on how I learned things so far, and on this continued learning path. Probably around May or June. Stay tuned! PS: I use NetBeans, not Eclipse ;-)

Can I get some more sample code to play with? It's just that, everyone keeps saying java is old and dead, it's nice knowing people like you can still make awesome android and web apps. Also, I'm having a hard time finding helpful resources to actually get good at java and was wondering how you are trained.

Depends on what you want to do. Two things I like to do with Java:

These two types of Java apps are kind of different, in the type of knowledge they require.

My point is: you have first to find what is of the greatest interest to you, what you'd love to know how to code. Then I could suggest a learning path. At the moment, I can just point to what worked for myself:

That's basically it. To recap:

I'm curious, is there anyway you could train me and maybe offload some duties my way so I can earn my keep?

  • text mining apps, with no user interface. Things that basically read a text file and find some interesting information within it.
  • web apps, where the user can actually use these functions, without having to be a coder themselves.

These two types of Java apps are kind of different, in the type of knowledge they require.

My point is: you have first to find what is of the greatest interest to you, what you'd love to know how to code. Then I could suggest a learning path. At the moment, I can just point to what worked for myself:

-

a book on Java for beginners, not to read from A to Z but to serve as a reference to look into when stuck - and you'll get stuck most of the time, in the first few weeks! I think I used the equivalent of this one. https://www.amazon.com/Java-Beginners-Guide-Herbert-Schildt/dp/1260463559

if you go for web apps: a great author is David Heffelfinger, I'd buy the latest of his books on Jakarta EE https://www.amazon.com/Jakarta-Application-Development-applications-persistence/dp/1835085261. Careful here: I just like Jakarta EE as a framework to develop web apps with Java, but this is actually a minority of devs who choose it. In terms of professional development, Spring is hegemonic as a framework for the backend of web apps, with Angular or React for the front https://www.amazon.com/Full-Stack-Development-Spring-React/dp/1805122460/. I just personally find Spring very bloated as compared to Jakarta EE. Also, I personally hate Javascript and the frameworks of JS, and JakartaEE allows me to develop an entire web app all in Java.

That's basically it. To recap:

  • you need to have an idea you are excited about. It should be quite small scale, so that you can accomplish it in a few weeks or months, not years. I am happy to help you assess it!
  • you'll need to invest in a couple of books. Sounds like Youtube tutorials or Stackoverflow would be enough, but it is kind of easier to have a reference you can read next to your computer.

Wouldn't work: I keep learning new stuff or refining things that I have done and that are non basic, there is no "beginner friendly task" that would slow me down and that I could offload. I sincerely think that the premise of starting learning coding is the excitement that you need to have about something that you'd love to create. That must come from you, it relates deeply to your personal history and interests. Once you're starting on that I'd love to give you feedback and share tips.

Thanks for the tip!
