@dshean that would be great, but we aren't really using BibTex anymore, we're using SphinxDoc and the sphinxcontrib-bibtex module for reading .bib files and putting them in our HTML and PDF documentation. There doesn't seem to be a style that does that but there is capability for rolling your own custom style, looks like some coding required. PRs welcome :)
Ah, I agree, it should be possible to define a custom style to accomplish this. Hard to justify prioritizing right now, but will add it to the list of things to attempt in the future.
Also, how would you feel about updating the bibtext style in https://github.com/NeoGeographyToolkit/StereoPipeline/blob/master/docs/papersusingasp.rst to be sorted in reverse chronological order by year? This should do it: https://github.com/plessl/latex-goodies/tree/master/bibstyles/plainyr-rev
