Fixes in Icelandic locale #637

Closed hrolfurgylfa closed 3 years ago

hrolfurgylfa commented 3 years ago

This mainly addresses fixes for the Icelandic locale.

Current tasks I want to complete before this is merged in, I'll be taking a look at the bottom two tomorrow:

I also want to look into changing "Þing" to something else as I'm expecting most people to not realize what it means, I had to check the translations to see what it was referring too. This is quite a big change though and I'll have to discuss it with other Icelandic people to find a better word, I can't think of anything on the spot, so I'll separate that out in a different PR when I get to that.

Also, if I changed something that someone speaking Icelandic disagrees with feel free to let me know and we can discuss it further, the biggest changes I could see someone disagreeing with are these:

Here are the lines I've already done you're missing, if you could just add them to yours that would be swell. I'll just throw them in here with the context as a screenshot, the stuff in red.

        "Tutorial.MTC.Creation" : "Sköpun og Gagnsemi",
        "Tutorial.MTC.RecordingStreaming" : "Upptöku og Streyming",

        "Tutorial.Grab.MoveRotate" : "Hreyfa/Snúa hlut í hendi",

        "Tutorial.WorldOrb.Click" : "Klikka veraldarkúlu",

        "Tutorial.Tooltip.GeneralPrimary" : "Nota",

        "Tutorial.Tooltip.ColorSecondary" : "Velja lit",
        "Tutorial.Tooltip.Brush" : "Teikna",

        "Tutorial.Tooltip.LightSecondary" : "Breyta lit",

changesoooooo

Ok, thanks, this commit should now have those with the exact same line position

Edit: Also included one fix I did earlier today by accident

@Nammi-namm I changed the "Neiclip" to "Flug gegnum veggi" since it's not that accurate, "Ekki clip" would be more accurate to the meaning but it still sounds a bit weird to me.

It's a bit longer but still looks like it fits there just fine, does this look better or should we try to find something else for this?

Nammi-namm commented 3 years ago

@hrolfurgylfa Problem with "Flug gegnum veggi" is that its using the terminology "flug" when noclip is not Fly, its specifically the lack of a physics based locomotion, no character collider, don't trigger many character collider checks. It's saying an ability it has, not what it is.

I used "Neiklip" as it was the closest thing I could think of without it being an inaccurate word soup. I'd think Neiklip would be the most understandable.

hrolfurgylfa commented 3 years ago

@Nammi-namm In the context of "Noclip" doesn't the no stand for not though? Like not clipping, that's why I said I could see "Ekki klip", as that would be a more accurate direct translation, but it still sounds weird to me.

That is true though, it is describing the ability, but I think we might need that if we want it to be even somewhat valid, since we don't have any word even close to "Noclip" and if we create new words people will have a hard time understanding it at first.

We might also want to check out other translations for this too, since I bet other languages might also be missing these kind of words, so looking at how other languages handled it might be helpful.

Nammi-namm commented 3 years ago

@hrolfurgylfa Most language options do a variation of "noclip", some are doing "lack of collision". Decided to gather a list of everything:

German does "noclip", with the other locomotion options translated in very German language, Japanese does "ノークリップ" or "Nōkurippu" "no clip", Korean is doing "노클립(No-clip)", or "nokeullib" "no clip" Czech doing "Noclip" with the rest translated, done by our lord and saviour Frooxius for the most part Spanish does "Sin collisión" French doing "Sans collisions" Swedish is doing "No clip" with Walk, Grab, Fly translated into proper Swedish Norwegian is doing "ikke-klipp" Russian is doing "Noclip", with Walk, Grab, Fly, and Teleport translated to cryllic, but not noclip for some reason Polish is doing "Noclip", has Walk, Fly, and Grab translated very Polish Dutch doing "Noclip", other locomotions translated as expected Turkish doing "Klipsiz" Finnish doing "Lento" Esperanto doing "Senkolizie" Estonian doing "Takistusteta" Both Chinese versions doing "穿墙" and "穿牆", not at all familiar with transliteration on Chinese so leaving it as is here. But google translate at least translates it to "Through the wall" for both.

Its a tough one. A lot harder than the clever solution I got to Teleport, with "Kúluvarp". Doing it the traditional way of repurposing an existing Icelandic word for something new, like the words Sími and Tölva. A lot of the other languages are just doing "Teleport" for Teleport, just like they're doing for Noclip. But yeah it is a hard one as is obvious with most translations of Neos.

I'm going to stay a fan of Neiklip, Easier to say than Ekki Klip. So far no alternative I at least agree on over Neiklip.

hrolfurgylfa commented 3 years ago

@Nammi-namm Ok, that's fair.

I still don't like "Neiklip", so I guess I'll go brainstorm more ideas and throw them your way, and hopefully we will eventually find a cool word combination like "kúluvarp" is for teleportation.

hrolfurgylfa commented 3 years ago

Norwegian is the closest one to us there though, and they're also using their translation of "ekki" instead of "nei". So I think I would prefer something like "ekki-klipp", like Norwegian. But yeah, I'll go and go look for more ideas and revert it until we decide on something else.

hrolfurgylfa commented 3 years ago

I haven't tested this in VR yet, did this in desktop, but it should be fine. I'll go ahead and go through this all in VR later toady.

Also, @Nammi-namm I'd appreciate it if you can run through the tutorial and see what you think, or at least check the JSON file just to make sure you're happy with it at some point, doesn't need to be today or anything like that.

I haven't changed anything that big in this one, the the only slightly bigger thing I changed was "menu takki" to "valmyndar takki" as we have a widely recognized word for menu, but otherwise it was just changing the spelling/structure of sentences.

hrolfurgylfa commented 3 years ago

I've now gone through this in VR too, so it should be good now.

Let me know if you have any thoughts Nammi.

Nammi-namm commented 3 years ago

Tested it, looks good. Noticed you caught my usage of URL and swapped with hlekk. Good catch. But swapped daufur with AFK. I know daufur isn't really the best word for it. Thinking though that "AFK" is fine though. I don't see an issue with it unless we got any actual terminology on it?

But yeah I say this is ready to go live in Neos as is.

hrolfurgylfa commented 3 years ago

Yeah, I didn't see any way to properly explain AFK without using a full sentence.

I'll go ahead and set this to ready to review then, thanks for checking it over.

Thank you very much for the big update!
