Sites to follow up with habitat confirmations

Place to keep track of sites that appear to have valuable habitat and significant passage issues (especially outlet drops). It is nice to have sites that are on small roads and unpaved roads too where actions are easier to achieve in the short term. Looking through photos - some of these will have the site number circled. The photos on onedrive could be actually really useful for that....

Double check that the site has not already had a habitat assessment because there is phase 1 and 2 sites in the 2023 pscis data.

• [ ] 14000637 - Tributary to Morice River

  • huge outlet drop
  • fish observations during assessment but no FISS obs upstream
  • good habitat
  • unpaved fsr but lots of fill

• [ ] 8300157 - Shandilla Creek.

  • great habitat, Skeena river immediately downstream
  • huge outlet drop
  • pink salmon observed just upstream.
  • highway so expensive.
  • two rock FISS obstacles not far upstream should be investigated.

• [ ] 8800070 - Fall Creek

  • Huge outlet drop but culvert is close enough to Skeena River that outlet drop would disappear during high water.
  • RB, DV, and CO FISS obs upstream
  • great habitat
  • on highway so expensive
  • construction could have negative environmental effects due to proximity to Skeena River.

• [ ] 14000855- Tributary to Morice River

  • same stream as 14000575
  • log jam blocking most of culvert
  • lots of erosion on road, culvert needs to be replaced.
  • RB and CT FISS upstream, fry observed at time of assessment
  • great habitat
  • small unpaved road

• [ ] 14000575- Tributary to Morice River

  • same stream as 14000855
  • Culvert is in rough shape, culvert needs to be replaced.
  • small outlet drop
  • CT FISS upstream and RB downstream, fry observed at time of assessment
  • great habitat

• [ ] 197640- Tributary to Buck Creek

  • 2 culverts both with decent outlet drops
  • good habitat but stream was dry during assessment
  • right near buck creek so assuming fish bearing, fish sample would be good.
  • small unpaved road

• [ ] 8302869 - Gershwin Creek

  • Very high value habitat upstream with pockets of gravel throughout. Adult cutthroat or rainbow observed just downstream of Highway 16 crossing upstream of here. Structure is dated 1923. At the time of the survey - water flowing within the concrete box culvert was approximately 2-5 cm deep. Skeena fisheries commission site with recommendation for installation of baffles. Fill depth estimated at 30 m and culvert length at 120 m, but changed to 9.9 and 99, respectively, due to submission template requirements.

  • fish obs during assessment and CT, DV confirmed upstream
  • small outlet drop but fish seen in pool and good spawning gravels just downstream
  • great habitat
  • highway so high traffic and expensive

• [ ] 8300970- Andimaul Creek

  • great habitat upstr and dstr
  • Huge outlet drop and water flows over big boulder at outlet, definitely a barrier to fish passage
  • Historic DV FISS sites upstream and close to skeena river.
  • highway so expensive but comments say it should definitely get fixed.

• [ ] 8800072- Tributary to Skeena River

  • great habitat upstr and dstr
  • Big outlet drop
  • fry seen in pipe during assessment and close to skeena river. Should confirm fish presence elsewhere.
  • low fill but highway so expensive

• [ ] 8302868 - Chicago Creek

  • High value habitat. Major work has been done on this crossing to backwater the outlet using driven sheet pilings. There is an approximate 1.2 m high drop following 40 m of stream after the outlet where adult coho spawners are staged. Incredible spawning habitat upstream with low gradients and abundant gravels. Structure has the date 1920 stamped on the inlet. Known coho spawning system with long history and the Chicago creek restoration society putting in work for over 20 years. Fill depth estimated at 18 m, but changed to 9.9 to fulfill provincial sumbission requirements..

• [ ] 8800026 - Singlehurst Creek

  • High value spawning habitat upstream. One redd observed upstream. DFO and MOTI historic back watering and side channel sites. Approximately 30 pink salmon spawners and 10 steelhead spawners immediately downstream of the last wooden structure downstream of the pipe. Crossing in is Kleanza Creek Provincial Park.

These details should be sorted through and added to the results section somehow. This will be the same in all reports going forward. I will take a shot at this just before finalizing for submission to HCTF. could be really useful report section for us and others.
