The GNOME designers are mid-icon refresh and seem open to helping with app icons.

Another idea could be a superhero bird with a N that has arrows pointing right sticking from the side of the letter on the necktie portion of the cape.

Edit: A superhero bird with an N on its chest sounds like a better idea.

Maybe, just maybe going into the direction of a different bird, something into tux direction?

Don't forget that it has to work at different scales (and, ideally, symbolic).

As for the Gnome icon refresh: PLEASE NO! The Corebird icon is a reasonable set of colours. The Gnome Refresh is too flat and saturated, IMO.
