Bug Report - Crash: "Deployment started" never completes #4404

Closed VortexFeedback closed 4 years ago

VortexFeedback commented 5 years ago

Vortex Version: 0.17.11 Memory: 31.91 GB System: win32 x64 (10.0.17134) Fresh installation of Vortex. Added Mount & Blade Warband, then tried to manage the game. It begins with "Deployment started" and a progress bar appears but it never goes anywhere. I can wait for hours and it will never finish. I searched online and no public solutions are posted for this issue.

A lot happens during deployment so it's unlikely a solution found online would necessarily help, the log gives a better indication.

You're using symlink deployment which on your system requires elevation. Elevation means that the moment Vortex tries to deploy it should be popping up an UAC dialog from windows asking you if you want to allow (a script started by) Vortex to make changes to your system. As far as I can tell from the log this dialog was never accepted nor rejected so Vortex was still waiting for a decision. If you're not seeing such a dialog, could you please alt+tab to see if it is somehow hidden in the background? Did you make changes to your security settings?

If this doesn't lead you to a solution, the best thing to do is probably this: Change the staging folder (settings->mods) to be on the same drive as the game, so if you have the game at something like "d:\games\mount and blade", you could set your staging folder to be "d:\vortex mods\mount and blade". If you change the folder inside vortex it will automatically move all mods, you don't have to do anything else. Once that is done you can select "hard links" for the deployment method on the same settings screen.

I have tried the steps mentioned here. The UAC pops up and I do confirm it.

I can not change the staging folder as the game needs to be managed to show up in the menu (if I am searching the correct place)

IDCs commented 5 years ago

Hi @ziat007, can you please provide more information about your environment. What sort of drive is F:\ ? Is it an ordinary IDE disk ? Have you tried to manage any games that aren't located on F:\ ?

ziat007 commented 5 years ago

@IDCs F is my games drive (2.5 SSD, my OS drive is an NVME). I have not tried managing games off my NVME as it is low capacity. If required I could try installing Stardew or another small game onto my NVME.

I don´t know what IDE means in this context.

IDCs commented 5 years ago

Hi @ziat007, IDE drives are the older spinning disk drives which I suppose aren't as used anymore, for good reason as they're slow and very susceptible to hardware issues - I was thinking it may be down to hardware if you did have an IDE drive but alas this is not the case here.

Trying to manage a smaller game on your NVME drive would be helpful as it will narrow down the list of possible culprits. Please let us know if you're still encountering the same issues on your OS drive.

ziat007 commented 5 years ago

@IDCs on my C: drive Vortex supports for games seems to install without a problem.

Can I get you any other helpful information?

TanninOne commented 5 years ago

Is this still a problem in 0.18.9? Vortex should now eventually give up deploying if the script never returns, at the very least that should give you the ability to change the staging folder.

ziat007 commented 5 years ago

@TanninOne I am on version 6/13/19 and the "Starting Deployment" screen stays there for 10m+ and does not exit, therefore I still can not change staging folder.

Vortex Version: 0.18.12 Memory: 15.87 GB System: win32 x64 (10.0.18362) I just installed Vortex today and I have not been able to use it yet. When I try to activate it for Pathfinder: Kingmaker it gets stuck at "Deployoment Started". I was sure to say yes to the Windows prompr for more permissions.

Vortex Version: 0.18.12 Memory: 15.97 GB System: win32 x64 (10.0.17134) When trying to activate Stardew Valley, screen stating "Starting Deployment" shows up, but freezes partially through the progress bar and never unfreezes. Vortex is unusable at all during this and must be forcibly closed. Game is never activated

@TanninOne here is my log file of the relevant time frame when I have tried to deploy games in Vortex. My C:\ drive is a SSD mainly used for my operating system, and my E:\ drive is where all of my games are. I've read through some of the other comments here and it seems I'm having very similar issues to what others describe.

Could someone affected please check if 0.18.13 makes a differences for this?

jessebateman commented 5 years ago

Unfortunately after updating to 0.18.13 I still get the same issue when trying to deploy Pathfinder: Kingmaker. vortex.log

Vortex Version: 0.18.9 Memory: 15.95 GB System: win32 x64 (10.0.18362) Mods were originally install via nexus mod manager. Install Vortex but used Vortex for Fallout 4 mods mostly. I'm not sure if I ever installed any Witcher 3 mods with vortex. I had to reload my operating system later on. I eventually installed Vortex again. I can log into the vortex. It doesn't show any of the games (the nexus mod website does show my pinned games). I have selected Witcher 3 from the list of game from within Vortex. The screen goes black and a grey status bar appears with the text ""Start deployment" inside. The makes it about one third of the way and just hangs there.
