signmessage fails with error in console and crashes nexus-qt

Nexus-qt v0.2.4.6, compiled from source under Ubuntu 16.04.

Using the Nexus-qt debug console ...

The same process using the GUI window from File | Sign Message hard crashes Nexus-qt, as in "... unable to continue safely."
