Virtual Desktop #214

Hello, I was wondering, it works great with Oculus Quest 2 and Link cable, but not with Virtual Desktop. Will there be any way to get it to do so? Thanks in advance.

I've been able to get Virtual Desktop to work like this.

Download and install MotherVR correctly (which I'm assuming you've done with link cable working well.) This consists of pasting the dxgi.dll file you will have downloaded from the extracted folder into the main Alien: Isolation game files you can reach by right-clicking Alien: Isolation and the Browse Local Files

Make sure that that the Alien: Isolation Steam settings (Right-click Alien: Isolation and then Properties) have Steam Overlay and Theater Mode turned off. Like this:

AI SETTINGS

Install or be sure you've installed Virtual Desktop Streamer: https://www.vrdesktop.net/

Open VD Streamer on your PC

For best results I've heard you should plug your pc into your router with an ethernet cable - I just make sure to use the same network connection for my quest and my pc.

The router you use also matters for your quality as well. If you have a dual-band (2.4 Gigahertz and 5 Gigahertz) Wi-Fi6 router that would also be optimal. I haven't tried any of this without a Dual-band or Wi-Fi6, so I don't know if this works without it.

I would recommend: this router

Open Virtual Desktop on your Quest and find your computer in the app.

Connect and then open Steam VR through the Virtual Desktop app by opening the menu with the left controller menu button.

(You may need to adjust VD's streaming and overall settings based on your PC's specs to get the best quality and performance.)

steam vr

When Steam VR opens, go to browse all and then All Games. Alien: Isolation won't appear in your VR category.

On the game page select "Open in Theater Mode" (Because we turned off actual theater mode for this game in the properties, it should actually open in VR instead of SteamVR's Theater Mode.)

Though the main menu screen appears flat, once you get in-game, it should be actual VR. (If you open games in Theater Mode regularly you should be able to tell the difference between if it opens in real theater mode and actual MotherVR)

I would make sure to set SteamVR as your VR Runtime in Alien Isolation's MotherVR settings as well.

Let me know if this works - I could have missed something and I can troubleshoot it for you more but I think this should fix it.

Thank you! But the issue I'm having is purely with the Oculus Touch controllers, and even with that only a couple of the buttons don't work. Again, only an issue with VD. With Link cable everything works fine. Do you know if your solution allows Touch controllers to work seamlessly?

Is it any of these problems? https://github.com/Nibre/MotherVR/issues/198 https://github.com/Nibre/MotherVR/issues/196 https://github.com/Nibre/MotherVR/issues/185 https://github.com/Nibre/MotherVR/issues/210

I had a rough time with the left grip button not pulling up the tracker and I was having trouble understanding what the bindings were for menu selection. https://github.com/HoriZon-nureekdotcom posted this jpeg with what I think is his bindings for touch controllers:

alien-isolation-controls

The default selection has it so you have to push up and click or down and click on the right analog stick to press what would be A or X on a gamepad and I hated it with a passion. For myself, I went ahead and selected a custom community created input binding in SteamVR's input settings while in-game and that's been working well for me.

I would rather be playing this with a gamepad than oculus touch controls the way they are. It seems like way more hassle to fix all the bindings than figure out my other problem (https://github.com/Nibre/MotherVR/issues/198). So I'm going to continue troubleshooting https://github.com/Nibre/MotherVR/issues/198 and I'll post again when and if I fix it.

Thank you. This is very helpful. I'll go tinker around a bit. Christopher Shih, M.D., F.A.C.G.RegionalGI.comChristopherShih.com
