3.1 Patch worked at first run of the game but the next day, it showed the same
error again. Haven't tried the fix though

So the game worked for one day then stopped? In that case go in to your
OS_Settings.User.xml and delete the following section (your values may differ):
<version_check day="1" month="1" year="2013">
<server_list version="1">
<server>http://os.halomods.com/Halo1/CE/Halo1_CE_Version.xml</server>
</server_list>
</version_check>
Then launch Halo again.

I dont have that line in my OS_Settings.User.xml file. will try to reinstall
for the last time... if that doesn't fix the problem, will try to reformat
whole system.
