And from now I 'll try to create a feature branch before hacking on something that I expect to send a pull request for, that way we should avoid all the "Merge remote-tracking branch 'upstream/master' " in the main repo...

I'm not sure, but maybe it wouldn't matter from your perspective. (atleast not for this particular reason). But I am really a newbie to git... I just read: http://blog.milkfarmsoft.com/2011/03/on-feature-branches/
