Unable to highlight first word on page 2.3.0

I am using PageTurner 2.3.0 on Android 9 and when I try and highlight the first word on a page it often does nothing instead of highlighting.

Repro steps:

1. Open app, open a book, turn a page
2. Press and hold to select the first word on the page, drag sliders to select more text
3. Press Highlight button

Expected outcome: Selected text is highlighted

Actual outcome: Text is unselected and button toolbar disappears.
