Note that this pr is from meta-tournament-chapter-WIP to meta-tournament-chapter.
Currently at the master branch the version of this Chapter is the old pre print whilst meta-tournament-chapter is up to date with the latest revised version. I branched from there so that the diff is going to be clean and easier to review.
There two TODOs currently in the chapter:

[x] re visit one paragraph (possibly after the manuscript is done)
