Regarding pcscd restart, this only fixes the symptoms but not the actual problem, typically a conflict between GnuPG and pcscd, right?

That's right. IMHO sometimes its exactly what one needs in a given moment.
Alternatively, how about adding this as a suggestion to pynitrokey? Say, under diagnostics command?
Can we join this with general NK3 troubleshooting, please?
