I think involving stakeholders, being transparent, and listening to feedback are the most important ways to continuously involve the community.
Since the SC is elected by the community and has a mandate to make decisions, it should exercise that mandate.
Engaging the community requires participating in community as well as active outreach. I would also consider it a duty to be easily reached and available, thus one specific mechanism I would employ is to hold regular Office Hours. I've held these in the past for technical matters and I've seen the NCA hold them to gather additional input for governance.
How would you ensure that the Nix community stays engaged with the Steering Committee (SC)
Regularly reaching out and giving updates on SC activities would be one of the most important aspects, in order for those interested to stay informed with the day-to-day decisions and actions being considered and voted on
actively participates
As mentioned by mschwaig, involving stakeholders involved in decisions we're making is paramount. We should never be making decisions that (in)directly affect people without first taking input, preferably by inviting them to our meetings. And echoing tomberek here, the NCA has done a great job in allowing participation through one-on-one office hours. I believe continuing this would assist greatly in SC members staying connected with the community, and regular users being confident that they are heard and can make a difference
and has a meaningful voice in the SC decision-making process to prevent a disconnect in values between the community and the SC?
I find this aspect to be guaranteed to at least be guaranteed initially through the voting process. For the duration of terms however, SC members should stay regularly involved and up to date with the desires of those in the community and put their best foot forward in matching that. There should be no point in which the SC's actions directly result in a group of people feeling unheard
To ensure community engagement and participation in SC decisions, I believe it’s crucial to implement consistent communication channels, such as feedback loops through surveys, open forums, and community meetings. Establishing regular feedback sessions where contributors can openly discuss concerns and suggestions ensures the SC reflects the community’s values. I would also promote transparency through regular SC updates and decisions being openly documented.
