unable to resume from suspend #119843

Closed davidak closed 2 months ago

davidak commented 3 years ago

Describe the bug When i suspend my system and try to resume again by hitting a key on the keyboard, the computer turns on (power supply clicks, fans turn on) but the screen stays black.

I have to turn it off hard by holding the power button for several seconds, to start it clean.

I'm able to reproduce it reliably with the provided steps to reproduce.

When RAM is not full, i don't have this issue.

There are also mentions of amdgpu. Maybe it could be related to that?

In any case, this looks like a kernel/driver issue and not caused by nixos itself.

This is the log from the time i suspended: ``` Apr 18 10:41:22 gaming io.elementary.wingpanel.desktop[43402]: JavaScript warning: https://s3-eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/prod.iqdcontroller.iqdigital/cdn_wissenschaft_dt/live/iqadcontroller.js.gz, line 7: unreachable code after return statement Apr 18 10:44:51 gaming io.elementary.wingpanel.desktop[43233]: ###!!! no amdgpu or kernel errors

To Reproduce

With this i'm able to reproduce it reliably:

  1. close every program except terminal

  2. disable swap

sudo swapoff -a
  1. fill 99.9% of RAM
nix run nixpkgs.stress-ng -c stress-ng --vm-bytes $(awk '/MemAvailable/{printf "%d\n", $2 * 0.999;}' < /proc/meminfo)k --vm-keep -m 1
  1. suspend the system. it can take some time until the system actually turns off
  2. try to resume. the system does power on, but i see a black screen. at that point, kernel errors are written to journal
  3. you have to hard shutdown the system by holding the power button
  4. start the system and check journal for kernel errors

Expected behavior Suspend and resume without issues

Additional context I'm using the Pantheon desktop and have an AMD RX 480.

I have this issue on and off with an AMD RX 5700XT and I also believe this is caused by the amdgpu driver.

edit: hibernating/suspending few times is enough to trigger the bug. The number of times I can suspend/hibernate varies before my desktop session is unusable (Sway) and my USB devices stop working.

davidak commented 3 years ago

@berbiche thanks. can you try if you can reproduce it reliably with the steps to reproduce?

berbiche commented 3 years ago

@davidak I couldn't reproduce the problem reliably. The system's memory usage did not seem to matter.

Artturin commented 3 years ago

i think have this same issue and using zram helps

davidak commented 3 years ago

@Artturin i think that only obfuscates the issue. like having swap or more ram does also help, because the ram does not get full

davidak commented 2 years ago

I still have this issue.

No one at AMD noticed my report for a year now, so i e-mailed them...

davidak commented 2 years ago

They told me they only support the operating systems RHEL, Ubuntu, SLED / SLES and Windows. So we don't get any support.

So i think the only thing we can do is using a kernel version that works stable and avoid those that crash often.

I was able to reproduce the issue on Ubuntu and created a new issue: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2223

I was not able to create a new support ticket since their contact form is broken:

Fixed upstream in https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2223

I leave this open until it is in our kernel. It will probably be in 6.2.

Presumably fixed in 6.1-rc4, closing.
