Provide a way to localize the NixOS manual #13153

In many countries, reading a documentation in English is a real barrier for many.

There should be a way to translate the NixOS manual in other languages, or at least the important parts like the installation.

Coordinating with local meetups and user groups, it should be possible to have an up to date (at least partially) localized manual for the stable releases.

Especially considering that the main NixOS documentation excluding the appendices and the code snippets is not that big.

As a comparison:

Of course this will bring some new problems like keeping localized documentations up to date, but IMHO this could bring real benefits.

So you feel that i18n should best start with the manual(s)? (and not e.g. with user-facing strings output by nix*)

Installing is one of the first thing a user would try to do. Having at least a way to provide official install instructions in different languages could help many and could also act as an introduction to Nix.

And the manual seemed simple and small enough to be a start.

Nothing in a hurry, but maybe we could for example set an objective to provide some translations for 16.09.

I expect it's not much worth to investigate how to do such things ATM, and it's better to just create (partially) translated copies of the XML files.

(I'm myself not fluent in any widely used language other than English, so I don't know much about i18n.)

For updating, note that with git it's rather easy to inspect updates to a sub-tree since some point in time, so it would be enough to just leave notes when the updates were last checked and integrated.

The manual is probably the easiest, part of our documentation that we can start with. This is a well known document format and i18n is already addressed in multiple projects. More over localizers are probably already familiar with the technology.

Still, I think adding such infrastructure should go with at least the intent to localize the documentation in one or two locale right away.

Do we know anybody as part of the community who might want to localize the manual if we had the infrastructure?

I interest in this issue, and can we reopen issue back again? I can write Vietnamese and I am willing to help NixOS manual translation. But outside of English and Vietnamese I don't think I may know more languages. I wonder what we need do first to make NixOS manual support more languages.
