This feels like something that should only live in the emacs-overlay, not in Nixpkgs.

Consider that the other two supported ELPAs have both their stable/unstable versions supported in nixpkgs: elpa/elpaDevel; melpaStable/melpa (see this to quickly fact-check).

What's the reason for this feeling; why should nongnu be an exception?
