Not relevant now that I use Wayland. This issue does not seem to occur. One thing I will note is that when I was still using X11 and i3 only certain applications seemed to do this. Mainly Discord and Alacritty. These applications also seemed to poison other applications if they were ever stacked in the same parent frame together, making other usually non-problematic applications into zombies.
i3 windows stop accepting input and stop rendering their area of the screen, quite often...
I have to then manually kill that window's process. They don't even respond to kill requests via the i3 keyboard shortcuts. I wrote a custom script which kills them.
